Headship? No. Ephesians 5:22 is not about that. Instead, the reciprocal submission practiced by a Christian couple is a wonderful example of how church members reciprocally submit according to the pattern given in Ephesians 5:19a and 5:21. Just like believers teach and exhort one another and then submit themselves to the teaching and exhortation they receive from one another, so too spouses are to teach and exhort one another and submit to that teaching and exhortation!
The meaning of Ephesians 5:22 is discovered in the matrix it is found in. Briefly, Paul turns to the relationship of married Spirit-filled believers to demonstrate how all members of the church build up one another.
Christian wives submit to the teaching and admonition they receive from their Spirit-filled husbands. And reciprocally, Christian husbands submit to the teaching and admonition they receive from their Spirit-filled wives.
The discussion in this Episode draws from the book Beyond Eden, Ephesians 5:15-6:9.
